The city of Tainan (Taiwan’s Fucheng) was built in 1733 during the Yongzheng period. The perimeter of the city wall is about eight kilometers long. There are 8 main gates and 6 outer gates, a total of 14 gates. The gates not only served as a military defense point, they also played the role of cohesive town. The city wall that has survived to this day has become a footprint of history and can have a place in the neighborhood (such as Tainan Duiyue Gate).
There are only three remaining gates at the main gate of Taiwan’s Fucheng. The site of this project is located next to the Great North Gate (Gongchen Gate). It was built in the first year of Qianlong (1736) and was demolished during the Japanese ruling era.
The North Gate is full of tourists throughout the year.
On the north side of the city wall, there is Yantan, the source of Wenyuan River. In the old days, villages along the Inner Sea of Taijiang River were able to transport goods from Wenyuan River to this place for sale. Therefore, a market was near the Great North Gate, was named “Shizaitou”.
Tainan Park was completed in 1917, and the opening ceremony was held on June 17th of the same year to coincide with the 22nd anniversary of the inauguration of the Government of Taiwan. It also serves as a tropical experimental forest. At this time, the city walls of Taiwan’s Fucheng have been demolished.
The relationship between the gate and the site, an image of the gateway to Tainan City.
The design takes the word “door” and its meaning as an idea, combined with the idea of the wind, vision, and corresponds to the green space, and uses modern architectural language to link with the spirit of historical monuments to create the image of a new gateway to Tainan today.
