The original Nanmen Market was born in 1906; the crowded but heartfelt market has been the birthplace of many life-lasting memories. Due to safety reasons, ‘the heart of Taipei’ was demolished and relocated in 2019. Situated on the busy Roosevelt Road, the new Nanmen Market provides a modernized, open space that encourages communication between pedestrians and users and a shared experience among families.
From the outside, Nanmen Market’s robust massing serves as a continuum of the neighboring urban fabric; functionally, it integrates the entrance and exit of the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall MRT Station, seamlessly connecting with many Taipei citizens’ daily traffic flows.
At the corner, the setback façade above the entrance square features cantilevered balconies, providing an open view of the busy street and creating an interwoven multi-level relationship among food, market, and pedestrian activities. Modular design gives more space to market stalls and enables more public resting spaces. Pedestrians under the arcades can witness the lively activities inside, while the customers can enjoy panoramic views of the cityscape through extensive, transparent glass walls.
On the ground floor, the multi-level projecting arcades along the street, the extensive glass curtain wall, and the open spaces introduce comfortable northern natural light. These create a bright and transparent environment both inside and outside the market. The design provides the urban streets a glimpse at the market’s vitality, attracting a younger demographic and making them the new users of the historically significant market.
The design focuses on air quality to improve the unfavorable perception of poor hygiene in traditional markets. By adjusting the air conditioning intake and exhaust configuration, introducing fresh outdoor air, and installing activated carbon filters and electrostatic fume treatment equipment, filtered exhaust is directed to the rooftop for discharge. These solutions ensure a clean, dry, and fresh environment.
To create an accessible and intuitive environment, each market stalls’ signage boards are designed to tilt downwards towards the customers. This ensures easy access to information for older demographics, the main customer base for Nammen Market, and those with impaired vision.
