Macronix Hall is located behind Future Venue. It is a new type of venue that NCKU constructed to respond to trends in higher education. Future talents in higher education will face more complex automation and technology challenges, and cross-discipline education is no longer only a catchphrase. How can NCKU create a learning model for cross-discipline talents, and what will the learning environment be like? Macronix Hall has taken on the challenge of finding answers to these questions. The people of NCKU need to further strengthen the spirit of “cross-domain innovation” and connect teachers and students from different colleges through project-oriented learning methods to quash existing thought patterns and form alliances between industry and academia. Macronix Hall is a center for cross-domain innovation that will incubate a new generation of NCKU people.
Although the site is located along an important axis of the bustling campus life, the design does not seek to highlight the significance of the building. Instead, the massing is placed to avoid conflict with the native trees and along the north side adjacent to a historical building, and a recessed north-south passage with extra ceiling height conveys a humble gesture. The rectangular building is narrow in the east-west and wide in the north-south axis. Expanded metal mesh and balconies are extensively deployed in the building envelope to shield direct sunlight. The roof is also covered with sunshade canopies as well as solar panels that provide renewable energy. Classrooms are equipped with movable partitions to serve multiple functions. The south end of the passage extrudes to form a tube-like space that adds to the diversity of the spatial units and creates a uniquely shaped meeting room, while also engaging in a dialogue with the towering old trees outside.
