We rebuilt the Taipei Public Library Beitou Branch
2022-02-22

In 2021, the children of Beitou Kindergarten, with the theme of “Exploring Beitou Library”, spent a year building a model of Beitou library by using building blocks at their school.

Beitou Library, the first green building library in Taiwan, is an important learning environment for Beitou Kindergarten. From children’s perspective, “It’s not like other houses, it’s triangular, it looks like a boat!” the child said.
Teachers used building blocks as materials to guide children’s hands and brains having bilateral conversations. Without using any tenons, each board is built on top of the other to balance the structure. Through collapsing and rebuilding again and again, the children continue to figure out ways to solve the problem together by utilizing different materials in the learning space. During the exploration process, the children learned the concepts of environmental protection, science, and mathematics. For example, understand the environment impact from solar panels. They also learned to use balancing skills to increase the structure stability of the library. “The building blocks falls as soon as I touched them, so I learned how to put them gently on each other, and we finally completed the Beitou Library together.” This construction process will help children remember the experience for a long time, which is more effective than just listening in class.

Although the class were suspended due to covid 19, these little architects still completed the work “Seeing Beitou Library” at the end of 2021 after returning to school. They have invited the director of Taipei City Library Beitou Branch Shen Dong-mei and architect Lee Chin-wei to share their achievements.
